I’ve decided to go for a (relatively) short list of some things I like:
Early summer mornings, pythonesque humour, strong black coffee, punk rock, expensive chocolate, gianduja, pralines, Twitter, draught Guinness, old maps, new maps, digital maps, maps, I like maps, full bodied red wine, Nottingham’s Left Lion and Old Market Square, set honey, spring, people who are rational and liberal, delicious bookmarking, woodland in summer, cats, Victoria plums, garish sunrise and sunsets, black, New York, rugged coastline and crashing waves, Ian Dury and The Blockheads, surreal and absurd nonsense, jazz, breakfast, museums and galleries, people who are bizarre and unconventional, getting lost in a book…
…and shove the even more tedious lists right down the page…
Original, even more tedious list:
Reading, travel, maps, food, chocolate, Liberalism, history, design, information technology, typography, Nottingham, genealogy, Sid Meier’s Civilization, public transport systems, sequentiality, spring, music, cinema, theatre and television. But not necessarily in that order.

I have no idea if you’ll see this. I happened upon your blog after googling my dad’s name – Clifford Rice. Then happily read through the histories you wrote about your Dad and Mum – both of whom I remember well. My dad died in 1997 and then mum came out to Australia – Melbourne to where we moved in 1990 and Alastair in 1995. Mum is still going, not especially strongly, so if you see this be happy it is being shared. Mum will love the stories and of course the photo of your christening where even I make an appearance held by my Grandad.
Hope you are well.
Adrian (Rice)
Hello Adrian, good to hear from you and I’m fine thanks. Coincidentally my sister Janis and I were reminiscing recently about Birstall and people we knew such as your family, the McCubbins and Valentines for example. Please give my best wishes to your Mum and Alistair.
